Londoners have roundly rejected an Islamophobic Twitter campaign in the wake of Sadiq Khan's mayoral victory, responding with messages of unity instead of division.

After Mr Khan became the capital's first Muslim mayor, some people began tweeting vile abuse and comments about "Londonistan" with the hashtag "#Londonhasfallen"

It began trending in the capital but, instead of joining in, the vast majority of Londoners decided to subvert its meaning or simply ridicule the racists.

Jason Aeson ‏wrote: "I expected #LondonHasFallen to be a racist hashtag, but it just seems to be a bunch of nice people taking the p*** out of racists."

RocklandsTV tweeted: "#LondonHasFallen in love with equality, positivity, love, arts, unity and hopes of PEACE - again X"

And @cassesque wrote: "Hot, extremist weather has already set in! #ShariaClouds #LondonHasFallen"

Tim Haselden said: "#LondonHasFallen to the forces of hope, love & unity. No wonder the racists are heartbroken."

Mr Khan, who has promised to be a "mayor for all Londoners", said in his victory speech yesterday he was proud that "London has chosen hope over fear and unity over division".
