Inside London’s car washes: Police make anti-slavery checks

Alex Gatenby|Eleanor Rose1 November 2017

Police are stepping up welfare visits to London car washes after the Evening Standard highlighted exploitation in the industry.

The Evening Standard went around two car washes with investigators from the Met's Modern Slavery and Kidnap Unit as well as the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) and HMRC.

Officers explained to our reporters what they are looking for when they visit "vulnerable premises" such as these.

Nobody on the visits to these two establishments reported that they were victims of slavery, but officers took the opportunity to show how they look for potential victims.

To help stop modern slavery, visit the Evening Standard's digital action platform.
