Allies of former Cabinet minister Andrew Mitchell today insisted his battle for justice would only end once he is back in government.

Senior Tory MP David Davis urged David Cameron to re-appoint him as a minister “as soon as possible”.

Mr Mitchell lost his job as Chief Whip after the “plebgate” storm.

He was accused of calling police “plebs”, which he strongly denies, after they refused to open the main gate at Downing Street for him to leave on his bicycle. On Friday, a serving police officer, Pc Keith Wallis, admitted lying about witnessing the row.

He pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to a charge of misconduct in public office, having been charged after sending an email to the then Conservative deputy chief whip John Randall, who was his MP, wrongly claiming that he had seen what happened.

Downing Street sources said there was on-going legal action, which is likely to delay any early return to the Cabinet for Mr Mitchell.
