A socialist housing campaigner has emerged as the favourite to be the new leader of Haringey council.

Zena Brabazon is the frontrunner within the local Labour party after a hustings and “secret ballot” of delegates.

Current deputy leader and senior Momentum member Joseph Ejiofor is also vying for the job.

Tonight the borough’s 42 Labour councillors will make a final decision.

Ex- leader Claire Kober quit amid claims she was bullied by Left-wing activists over plans to drive through housing and regeneration scheme the Haringey Development Vehicle (HDV). Ms Brabazon and Mr Ejiofor strongly opposed the proposal, which involved a partnership with private developer Lendlease.

Labour were voted back in to run the council at last Thursday’s local elections, but lost seven seats to the Liberal Democrats. Ms Brabazon, a councillor for Harringay ward, was among signatories to a letter that prompted Labour’s National Executive Committee to say HDV should be axed. The new leader will be invited to talks with Lendlease.
