Boris Johnson defended the US as a “bastion of peace and freedom” as he was hit with questions over Donald Trump’s response to George Floyd’s death.

The prime minister was asked if he still believed Mr Trump had "many, many good qualities" following criticism over his handling of Black Lives Matter protesters.

Mr Johnson told the Commons: “Yes black lives matter and yes the death of George Floyd was absolutely appalling.

“As for the qualities of Mr Trump let me say amongst other things he is President of the United States which is our most important ally in the world today and whatever people may say about it – whatever people on the left may say about it – the United States is a bastion of peace and freedom and has been for most of my lifetime.”

Mr Johnson was speaking in response to a question from the SNP’s Kirsty Blackman who asked: “The response to the US President to the death of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matters movement has been horrendous.

“Can the Prime Minister confirm to me if he still believes Trump has ‘many many good qualities’ and if so, what are they?”
