Vote Leave has fallen three points behind in a shock poll conducted during the aftermath of MP Jo Cox’s death.

The Remain camp surges ahead in the survey published today in the Mail on Sunday, demonstrating a six point swing since another similar poll on Thursday.

The new sample put 45 per cent on the side of David Cameron while 42 per cent said they were convinced by Boris Johnson and Vote Leave.

Members of the public were surveyed by telephone in the two days after Labour MP Mrs Cox, a Remain supporter, was shot and stabbed outside a constituency surgery in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

Some commentators have suggested the tragedy could lead to more voters supporting Remain as members of the public turnout in greater numbers or become more risk-averse.

EU referendum: All you need to know

Another Survation poll published on Thursday – before Mrs Cox’s death – had 45 per cent of people backing Leave while 42 per cent supported Remain.

Thursday also saw the unveiling of a controversial “Breaking point” poster campaign by Nigel Farage. In the latest poll 43 per cent said they thought it was inflammatory. Just 28 per cent thought it was fair.

A separate poll published today in the Observer put the two sides neck and neck with just four days left until the referendum on Thursday.
