Karen Danczuk has claimed her split with her MP husband Simon was in part down to his “jealousy” of her new lifestyle.

The 32-year-old said the Labour MP was “taken aback” after she became well known for her cleavage-revealing selfies on social media.

The couple, who have two children, have separated after three years of marriage.

Mrs Danczuk told the Sun: “He was overwhelmed that suddenly it was all about me. I think there was a bit of jealousy. I’ve changed so much mentally and physically. I’ve gone from fat, frumpy Karen to happy, confident and sexy Karen - and I can’t ignore that.

“It used to be all about Simon. I used to be his plus-one, but it changed dramatically and became more about me. Even at MP events, I became the star. Simon probably just felt a little taken aback.”

The former Labour councillor, who lost two stone after hiring a personal trainer, said she now wanted to focus on her career, having made several TV appearances and amassed 57,000 followers on Twitter.

There was “no blazing argument”, she said, but the pair realised their lives “were becoming very different”.

She added: “I think he was a bit embarrassed of my selfies to begin with, but Simon continued to support me. But it got to the stage where he was coming home from London and I was heading there - it was a case of us juggling, looking after the boys.”

Writing on Twitter yesterday, Mr Danczuk, 48, MP for Rochdale, said of the split from his second wife: “I’m devastated, but life has to go on.

“Thank you for all the nice words following the separation between my wife and I. I’m very upset but focusing on work helps me.”

Mrs Danczuk stood down from her role as a Labour councillor for Rochdale’s Kingsway ward in May, saying she wanted to get a better balance of work and family life.
