David Cameron has hailed his new team as one that "reflects modern Britain" after he made sweeping changes as high profile ministers were axed in favour of women.

After his most dramatic reshuffle in government, the Prime Minister insisted Education Secretary Michael Gove had been given "one of the most important jobs in government" as Chief Whip.

Nicky Morgan replaced Michael Gove at Education after his high-profile fallouts with teaching unions. She was one of several high-flying women to be drafted into key roles as Mr Cameron sought to shake up his Cabinet ahead of next year's election.

Speaking in the garden of 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister said: "This is a fresh team with the ideas, the energy, the policy and the ability to take this country forward, to complete the long term economic plan and secure our future.

"I think it is a team that reflects modern Britain and it is by reflecting all of modern Britain that we will get the best for our country."

He played down the significance of Mr Gove's job switch, which will see him lose full Cabinet membership and take a £36,000 per year pay cut.

The Prime Minister hailed Mr Gove - who will be given more media responsibilities in the run-up to the general election - as "one of my big hitters, one of my real stars".

"I can tell you, if you are Prime Minister, the chief whip is one of the most important jobs in government," he said.

"I wanted one of my big hitters, one of my real stars, one of my great brains, someone who has done extraordinary things for education in this country, to do that job, to deliver the Government's programme, to help secure the future for our country.

"I am pleased that he is doing that job. He will do it brilliantly."
