Michael Owen has revealed David Cameron chose the top bunk when the pair shared a cabin on their way to Afghanistan.

The Prime Minister was given first dibs when he accompanied the former England striker on a trip to Camp Bastion on a military transport plane.

Owen said the noise levels on the aircraft on the way to see British troops meant it "wasn't the best flight".

"I obviously let the PM choose first. He chose top. I was quite surprised myself.

"I couldn't hear anything. I was wondering if he was going to snore but I couldn't hear anything with the noise up there and obviously you can hear the pilots all the time.

"So, let's say it wasn't the best of sleeps, but who's to complain? We were in the best place."

Mr Cameron later praised his flight companion: "Well, he's charming. He's a very nice guy and it was interesting to reflect on his footballing career and now he's putting a lot back into helping others and I think that's a really commendable thing to do."

Owen also floated the idea of a football match between England and Afghanistan at Wembley, saying it would be a "fantastic" way to mark the end of the conflict.

The former England striker said the Afghan team, which recently won the South Asia Cup, was "pretty good" and backed the idea of the "fully-fledged" match between the two nations.

It swiftly won support from David Cameron, who said it was an "excellent idea".

"I'm sure that there will be many very dignified national events that should take place," the Prime Minister said.

"We can talk about that and discuss about that in the future but the idea of one part of it being a football match, I think, is a very nice idea and I'm very grateful to the football players for making the effort to come out and play the game today."
