US President Donald Trump's homeland security adviser has resigned in the latest White House departure.

Thomas Bossert is set to leave his post, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement on Tuesday.

She said Mr Trump was "grateful for Tom's commitment to the safety and security of our great country".

Mr Bossert's role was aimed at advising the White House on protecting the nation from terror and cyber threats. He also helped spearhead the administration's response to last year's hurricanes in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.

His exit is the latest in a wave of departures from the West Wing in recent months. Incoming national security adviser John Bolton began his tenure only last week.

The news comes shortly after FBI agents raided the offices of Mr Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen.

Officers obtained a search warrant following a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller, according to the New York Times.

The New York Times reported that FBI agents seized records relating to several issues, including a £91,000 ($130,000) payment Cohen has said he made to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Mr Mueller is investigating claims of Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, including claims of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian agents.

Mr Trump tweeted shortly after: "A TOTAL WITCH HUNT!!!"
