Ed Miliband promises people a say in the closure of hospitals and A&E departments

Local communities would be given a “real say” over threatened closures of A&E departments and hospitals under Labour, Ed Miliband pledged today.

He promised to give patients and the public “a seat at the table” from the very start of changes to NHS organisations.

A new independent body, rather than NHS chiefs, would organise public consultations on altering hospital services.

The Labour leader said: “If we are truly to make our public services open to the voices of those they are meant to serve, we need to throw the decision-making structures open to people too. We need to tackle inequalities of power at source."
