European Union leaders have landed an agreement to set up migrant centres in countries across the EU after a marathon session of all-night talks in Brussels.

Donald Tusk, the EU Council President, confirmed on Twitter that the 28 leaders have agreed on a migration compromise at their two-day summit.

Italy, the entry point of thousands of migrants, had threatened to veto the conclusions of the group's entire agenda if it did not receive help on the issue.

The talks continued into the early hours of Friday morning until a compromise, which will see migrant centres set up in EU countries, was reached.

For Theresa May, the summit was also an opportunity to update her EU counterparts on the latest Brexit developments.

The other 27 EU leaders will continue their meeting in Mrs May's absence as they discuss their approach to the future relationship between the UK and Brussels.

Before the migrant compromise was reached, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte had called for a fundamental change in the bloc’s migration policy.

He said that his country received little help even though it was at the forefront of receiving migrants from across the Mediterranean.

"Italy doesn't need any more verbal signs, but of concrete deeds," Mr Conte said upon arrival at the EU summit in Brussels Thursday.

Italy's proximity to North Africa has turned it into a key destination for migrant arrivals.

Mr Conte insisted that burden be shared better across the EU.
