Tens of thousands of ballot boxes are under lock and key ahead of counting for the European elections.

After Brits went to the polls on Thursday, counting will begin from Sunday morning.

The results will be announced from 10pm – the time when all European nations have finished voting.

In the UK, Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party is expected to have enjoyed significant success.

An Ipsos MORI survey for the Standard, carried out between Monday and Wednesday, showed the new party polling at 35 per cent, well ahead of the resurgent Lib Dems on 20 per cent.

Theresa May, who resigned as Prime Minister on Friday, is thought to have led the Tories into an election disaster. Her party polled at just 9 per cent.

This put the Conservatives fifth behind the Greens on 10 per cent, with Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour also struggling in third on 15 per cent.

Overall, the UK will elect 73 candidates to the European Parliament.
