Home Secretary Amber Rudd seemed shaken in a BBC interview ahead of an extremely tight result in her constituency of Hastings.
Mrs Rudd won by the narrowest of margins of 346 votes, after two recounts.
She had 46.9 percent of the vote, with 25,668. Labour's Peter Chowney had 25,322.
Thousands of people flooded Twitter with remarks about Mrs Rudd as the recounts progressed and predictions suggested she may lose her seat.
She gave a shaky interview to the BBC earlier in the night. When Mrs Rudd arrived at count she was asked by a BBC interviewer: “How do you think it is going?”
She responded: “John I’m not going to engage much until we are a little clearer where it is at the moment so I’m just quietly waiting and making sure we keep an eye on everybody and everything in the normal way.”
The interviewer then asked: “You’re confident are you?”
“John I’m… I’m just hopeful, but not complacent," she replied.
The BBC commentators noted the “look on her face” and one viewer wrote online: "She is looking nervous."
Another added: "I actually feel a bit sorry for Amber Rudd." And several people commented that she looked "shaken" at the prospect of the result.
