Gordon Brown was today spending the day at home in Scotland after his dramatic departure from Downing Street.

The former Prime Minister, who remains the MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, returned to North Queensferry with wife Sarah and two young sons.

He has already said that he would like to work for charity or do voluntary work and, despite his extensive experience of the financial world, ruled out a job in business, saying that he just wanted to do "something good" rather than make money.

In the longer term, Mr Brown, who has also suggested that he might write further books, is being strongly tipped to return to the world stage with a possible role as the next head of the International Monetary Fund.

Until then Mr Brown will rely on his MP's salary of £64,766 because, unlike other ministers, he is not entitled to the three months' severance pay they receive.

Meanwhile, Tricia Marwick, the Scottish National Party MSP for Central Fife, urged local authority leaders in Fife to recognise Mr Brown's "outstanding public service" by giving him the freedom of the district.
