Lily Allen has sparked fury online after claiming in a response to Theresa May’s Brexit speech that the world hates Britain due to slavery.

The star made the outburst on Twitter as the Prime Minister made her announcement on plans for leaving the EU.

Ms May said she wanted to create a “global Britain” after Brexit, announcing the country would definitely leave the single market.

But an unconvinced Ms Allen wrote: “A Global Britain could b good, but the world still hates us cause, SLAVERY.”

After a fierce online backlash in which she was told to “go and read a history book”, the singer quickly deleted her tweet.

David Fisher tweeted: "She's completely mad. We were first country in the world to abolish slavery.”

“Read a history book, or the bible ” wrote Hitchfan.

“Slavery is a historical human problem, not a British invention.”

The singer later shared a screengrab from the National Archives referring to Britain and Portugal making up the majority of all Africans transportation to the Americas.

“Just gonna leave this here,” she said.

And she told one detractor: “We also banned smoking in pubs a few years back.

“Doesn’t mean smoking in pubs never happened.”

The singer recently provoked a backlash with her views after apologising to an Afghan teen in the Calais Jungle camp “on behalf of my country”.
