London's commuters are being denied “basic connectivity” on their phones, Lord Adonis said today.

The chairman of the National Infrastructure Commission lashed out after its report identified train routes, stations and main roads among “digital deserts” where data links do not work.

He said London’s 4G coverage was letting down the public and firms, adding: “Hundreds of thousands commute into our capital every day, yet our railways and roads lack the basic connectivity passengers need.”

The NIC was asked in March to advise ministers on how the UK can become a “world leader” in faster 5G coverage.

But it found there was still much to be done to haul the UK out of its 54th position in global rankings for 4G, with typical users able to access the service 53 per cent of the time.
