A leading Liberal Democrat MP has been temporarily banned from Mumsnet after naming a family in a case where a mother was forced to give up her child.

Outspoken backbencher John Hemming had his account suspended after his posts also revealed other users’ identities.

The Birmingham Yardley MP, 53, has criticised Essex county council over a custody battle in which a 35-year-old Italian woman, with mental health problems, was forced to have a Caesarean section and had her baby taken by social services. Seeking to defend her on Mumsnet, the MP posted an Italian court order, which included the woman’s name and those of her children, which may be in breach of UK reporting restrictions on the case.

He said: “As soon as I realised my error, I contacted Mumsnet and asked them to take the posts down.

“My eight-year-old daughter is thrilled I’m on the naughty step.”
