Former Liberal Democrats leader Nick Clegg is set to receive a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours, according to reports.

He will reportedly become ‘Sir Nick’ in recognition of his five years serving as David Cameron’s deputy Prime Minister under the coalition.

His inclusion on the annual honours list, which saw Andy Murray and Mo Farah knighted last year, is likely to cause controversy due to his vocal anti-Brexit stance.

The 50-year-old has become one of the forefront Remain voices since losing his Sheffield Hallam seat to Labour’s Jared O’Mara in this year’s snap general election.

He has called for the 2016 EU referendum to be overturned and wrote a book titled ‘How to Stop Brexit’.

Senior party sources confirmed Mr Clegg’s honour to the Daily Mail, although there has been no official Lib Dem statement.

Other senior Lib Dem figures including party leader Vince Cable and home affairs spokesman Ed Davey have previously received knighthoods.

The move is set to be confirmed today when the official New Year’s Honours list is announced.
