David Cameron has written to Commonwealth leaders about changing royal succession laws so if Prince William and Kate Middleton's first child is a girl she would become Queen.

MPs say the rule of primogeniture, under which a woman in the line of succession is automatically superseded by a younger male sibling, should be ended before the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have children.

In readiness for a Commonwealth summit in Perth at the end of the month, Mr Cameron has written to the prime ministers of countries where the Queen is head of state. Mr Cameron said: "It isn't an easy issue but I'm very clear it's an issue that we ought to get sorted."

His letter also suggests changing the ban on the monarch marrying a Catholic.
