Tessa Jowell was today embroiled in a furious clash with advertisers over her pledge to ban “sexist” posters from Tube stations and buses.

Her attack on campaigns like “Is your body beach ready” came under fire from Ian Twinn, of the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers.

“If Tessa Jowell has the answer of what is a healthy body please share it with us,” he said: “She appears to think that the ‘beach body ready’ ad is sexist. Is being healthy and a low waist size offensive to her?”

He added: “Or is she asking for obesity to be normalised?”

Ms Jowell branded his comments as “straight out of the dark ages”.

“Women must be allowed to travel on the tube without being told they need to meet an ideal body shape,” she said. “I’m amazed this needs pointing out in 2015.

“The ISBA should back this positive change instead of defending the indefensible with this sort of nonsense.”
