Theresa May shared a cosy dinner with Boris Johnson to mark the historic triggering of Article 50 on Wednesday, it has been reported.

The Prime Minster and her husband Philip joined the Foreign Secretary and his wife Marina Wheeler on the evening the Brexit countdown officially began, according to the Times.

Mrs May, who described Wednesday as “a great turning point in Britain’s history”, was seen entering Mr Johnson’s grace-and-favour flat near Buckingham Palace.

The Times reported that the intimate festivities continued “into the night”.

Just hours earlier Mrs May made Brexit an irreversible reality after 44 years of EU membership when her letter invoking Article 50 was hand-delivered to Mr Tusk in Brussels.

The six pages detailed opening positions for what will be the most complex set of negotiations since the Second World War began, signed off with a “Yours sincerely” and Mrs May’s signature.

In a statement to the Commons, she spoke of “a new deep and special partnership between Britain and the European Union” and promised: “Our best days lie ahead.”

She also promised to work “constructively in a spirit of sincere cooperation” and hoped the UK would become “a best friend and neighbour” of the EU.

A deal to safeguard the rights of EU citizens living in the UK would be a priority for her, she said. And there would be no attempt to “cherrypick” from EU rights and responsibilities.
