Theresa May today refused to confirm or deny whether she has discussed giving Nigel Farage a peerage when asked during Prime Minister’s Questions.

The Prime Minister attempted to laugh it off when she was asked if “any official conversation” had taken place over whether to give the interim Ukip leader a seat in the House of Lords.

During Wednesday’s Prime Minister’s Questions, SNP member George Kerevan asked: "Can the prime minister confirm or deny if there have been any official conversations at any level regarding giving Nigel Farage a peerage?"

Cries of “hear, hear” and laughter from MPs were heard in the chamber after he put his question to the Prime Minister.

Mrs May declined to give a firm answer and said protocol prevents any public discussion of the matter.

She replied: “Well, all I can say to the Honourable Gentleman I'm afraid is that such matters are normally never discussed in public."

A peerage would install the Ukip politician in Parliament, to which he has repeatedly failed to be elected.

Mr Kerevan’s question comes following speculation that the Ukip leader could act as a “go-between” for the Government and Donald Trump after he became the first British politician to meet the president-elect.

On Monday, Number 10 rubbished the claims that Mr Farage would serve as an intermediary insisting “it is categorically not going to happen”.

A spokesman for Mrs May said that No 10 "has been consistent that Mr Farage has no role" in the Government's relationship with the incoming US administration.
