Meghan Markle's Valentine's Day blog post: The Duchess's empowering words on being single

'This Valentine’s Day I will be with friends, running amok through the streets of New York, likely imbibing some cocktail that’s oddly pink, and jumping over icy mounds in my new shoes through the salted snowy streets of the West Village'

On Valentine's Day in 2016, months before Meghan Markle and Prince Harry met and began their PDA-filled romance, Markle was a single woman spending Valentine's Day solo.

Unaware at the time that her future husband was just around the corner, Markle marked Valentine's Day with a love letter to everyone without a partner on the most romantic day of the year.

In a now archived post for her old blog The Tig, she wrote “I think you need to be your own Valentine. I think you need to cook that beautiful dinner even when it’s just you, wear your favorite outfit, buy yourself some flowers, and celebrate the self love that often gets muddled when we focus on what we don’t have.”

The Duchess of Sussex also recalled a story of a time when she found herself “in some sort of funk” while filming her show Suits. As she criticised herself to co-stars Gina Torres and Sarah Rafferty - her “Suits sister wives” - she said one of them put an end to her bad mood pretty quickly.

One of them told her off and said, “Hey! That’s my friend you’re talking about. Be nice to her.”

Her friends were, Markle wrote, “reminding me to treat myself as well as I treat those closest to me.”

As for what she actually did on V-Day? She wrote, “This Valentine’s Day I will be with friends, running amok through the streets of New York, likely imbibing some cocktail that’s oddly pink, and jumping over icy mounds in my new shoes through the salted snowy streets of the West Village” - how very poetic.

The post was accompanied by a photo of Markle in a snowy park, sitting on a bench with a bouquet of long stemmed red roses. She also showed off the shoes in question, a pair of pointed flats with a shiny red bow on the front.

“Those shoes, by the way, were my gift to myself" she wrote, "Because I’ve worked hard, because I’m not going to wait for someone to buy me the things I covet (nor do I want to), and because I want to treat myself as well as I treat those dearest to me. Because I am my own funny Valentine.”

“Whether you have a special someone, you’ll be with friends, or you’ll be flying solo this Saturday (or any other day for that matter), be good to yourself. Love yourself, treat yourself, honor yourself and celebrate you. Be your own beautiful, darling, cherished and funny Valentine. You deserve it,” she finished.

So if you’re spending Valentine’s Day on your own, it’s time to plan some grand romantic gestures and celebrate you. That’s not coming from us, that's a decree from the Duchess.
