Google puts Battersea on the map after six years of dodgy directions

Google: Changed Clapham to Battersea after a six-year campaign from residents

Battersea residents are celebrating after a successful six-year campaign to persuade search engine Google to change its online maps, which had wrongly labelled the area Clapham.

Councillor Tony Belton, whose ward includes the disputed territory around Clapham Junction station said he was "really, really delighted" at the news.

"This is very important for Battersea's sense of community and identity. We want people to know that after the riots, it was Battersea brooms that came out to clear up," he said.

"If I hear someone on a train saying they're just coming into Clapham, when they mean Clapham Junction, I say to them, 'My goodness, you must be on the wrong train'. There's a serious side too. I've heard of ambulances going to the wrong place because someone called 999 saying they were in Clapham High Street."

Mr Belton revealed that Mayor Boris Johnson had sent the campaigners a letter of apology after referring to the area as Clapham in the wake of the riots. Battersea locals said they were pleased the campaign had made progress.

Trainee lawyer Rory Carter said: "It took me a while to realise why this matters, but it really does. It's important to know which community you live in. Of course, it'll be interesting to see the effect this has on house prices in the area."
