London train stations to go Google on 360° Street View

On a roll: Google’s camera trolley at Liverpool Street
7 March 2012

Some of London’s busiest train stations are to feature on Google Street View for the first time.

Photography of the concourses of the 13 featured stations — which include London Bridge, Liverpool Street, Victoria and Paddington — has been taking place over the past two weeks using a special “trolley” which captures the images.

Engineers will work the material into a 360 degree application. The trolley has also been to Cannon Street, Charing Cross, Euston and Fenchurch Street. Network Rail said there are plans for King’s Cross and Waterloo but due to building work they are to be photographed at another date.

Google said the project, between Network Rail and the internet company, would improve passenger experience by enabling first-time visitors to check the layout and facilities of stations they are visiting before they set off.

David Sidebottom, director of Passenger Focus, said: “This is a great idea and it is good to see the rail industry taking an innovative approach to improving passenger information.”
