A man who was the first person to buy the new iPhone 6 in an Australian city dropped it immediately after taking it out of its box.

Jack Cooksey was being interviewed outside the Apple store in Perth for television channel Perth News when he made the hilarious blunder.

As he held the precious gadget, which costs between £540 and £700, his hands began shaking and he could be seen struggling to release it from its cardboard packaging.

He opened the box but the phone suddenly fell to the floor.

Luckily its plastic covering protected it from serious damage.

Mr Cooksey told the Perth Sunday Times: "I dropped it in a panic to get it open, luckily it's covered in plastic, so it's fine."

He added he was looking forward to using the phone at home - presumably so he could keep it away from any hard pavements.

Thousands of Apple fans are set to get their hands on the new iPhone model in London today.

Some enthusiastic customers have been camping outside the Apple store in Regent Street since Monday in the hope of being among the first to pick up the phone.
