First it was Angry Birds, then Bad Piggies, and don’t forget Fruit Ninja — but now the latest smartphone game giving Londoners thumb-ache is Candy Crush Saga. Since its release last November, users have spent hours trying to tackle the game’s simple aim: to match up three or more of the same brightly-coloured sweets.

With more than 100 levels and a maximum of five lives a day, it is easy to get hooked — especially as it’s free. But if you want to continue you have to pay a fee to unlock the next stages.

King, the company behind Candy Crush Saga, is now a key player in the gaming world, thanks to the success of the game this year. “You read the stats in reports from market intelligence companies such as IDC. But when you experience it, it’s mind-blowing,” says Riccardo Zacconi, co-founder and CEO of King.

Indeed, Candy Crush Saga currently sits in the top 10 grossing apps in most markets and is now the most popular app on Facebook. You’re likely already to have been alerted by the site that “dozens of your friends have played Candy Crush”, alongside graphics of its brightly coloured sweets, or had your newsfeed deluged with pleas from friends for help.

Last month King announced that it is launching two new games, which will also be available as apps on Facebook: Papa Pear Saga and Farm Heroes Saga. But we will have to wait and see if these new apps live up to the game making Londoners sugar addicts.
