Forget about the Oculus Go, there’s a new virtual reality headset in town: the Oculus Quest.

Revealed last night at an Oculus conference, the new wireless headset is part of Oculus’s vision for the next era in VR gaming.

The Oculus Quest is an all-in-one VR gaming system, meaning you don’t need to connect to a PC or smartphone as all the games you need are stored right in the headset.

Thanks to the wireless system, you have the freedom to move around and get the most out of being in virtual reality completely untethered, with only four-wide angle cameras on the front of the device tracking your location.

The Quest will launch with over 50 titles, including some well-loved Rift games like Robo Recall and The Climb, with more titles in the works.

Oculus says it has improved on some of the best features of the Go headset for the new device. The Quest has the same optics as Go, with a display resolution of 1600x1440 per eye, but also incorporating a lens spacing adjustment so the visuals feel comfortable.

Audio has been improved for the Quest to give you an immersive sound experience too.

As well, the Oculus Touch controllers have undergone an upgrade. They have a new design, but with the same button mapping, so previous gamers will feel comfortable getting used to the new controllers.

One of the new developments for the latest headset is Oculus Insight. This is the company’s new technology that powers inside-out tracking, Touch controller tracking and Guardian. Guardian is the part of Oculus’s technology that displays the boundary markers in a game so you can keep within the parameters.

Oculus says Insight makes the immersive experience better, whilst also adding the Guardian features to keep you safe when playing.

The new headset is more expensive than Oculus Go, retailing at $399. This is because the new features, like not being tethered to a computer or a smartphone and not having external tracking sensors, are bridging the gap between the entry level Go headset and the more gamer-focused Oculus Rift.

Oculus Quest wasn’t the only thing Oculus announced last night. The company is working on a new project with Lucasfilm’s immersive entertainment division to create a virtual reality Star Wars experience.

Oculus says it’s going to be an untold story in the Star Wars universe which will debut next year, named Vader Immortal. Fans are going to be invited to experience Darth Vader “as never before.”

The company’s head of experiences, Colum Slevin, said: “Whether it’s hearing Darth Vader’s breathing behind you and physically turning to face him in person or wielding a lightsaber with your own hands, Vader Immortal captures the ultimate wish fulfilment.

"Untethered VR immerses you in this universe and places you at the centre of this amazing story.”

This is sure to be a very exciting moment in VR history.
