One in three British adults check their smartphones in the middle of the night, research has found.

The devices are responsible for keeping people awake at night long after they've gone to bed, a survey revealed.

Half of young people, aged between 18 and 24, who were polled claim they check for messages throughout the night – and one in six would reply.

Paul Lee, from technology company Deloitte, who carried out the research, said: “Consumers will need to learn how best to run their lives with smartphones, as opposed to having their lives run by their devices.”

The survey of 4,000 British smartphone users found that one in ten instinctively reached for their phone as soon as they woke up.

Many French employers have ordered staff to switch-off company smartphones outside working hours to boost morale and increase productivity in the workplace.

Ofcom reported that 34 per cent of internet users have taken a period of up to a month away from their devices.
