OnePlus has carved out a niche for itself in the Android market as a maker of affordable phones with flagship features.

Now, it wants to do the same with tablets. Just months after it released its inaugural slate, the £449 OnePlus Pad, the Chinese firm is gearing up to launch an even cheaper follow-up that should appeal to budget-conscious buyers.

The new OnePlus Pad Go looks similar to its predecessor, based on official images shared on the OnePlus India site. The rounded edges are back, but this time the company has opted for a lighter shade of green and a two-tone design on the back.

Best of all, OnePlus confirmed to Digital Trends that the tablet will have a 2.4K resolution. That’s just slightly less crisp than the 2.8K, and roughly the same as the 11-inch iPad Pro. It also revealed that Dolby Atmos will pump high-fidelity sound through the tablet’s speakers.

Alas, there’s no word whether it will match the Pad’s 11.1-inch size, 144Hz refresh rate and 500 nits of brightness.

Those types of specs may be too good to be true at a lower price. OnePlus has described the Go as “a mid-tier entertainment tablet”, so we can expect there to be cutbacks in other areas. A less powerful chip and a cheaper build is almost certainly on the cards. Maybe, the “Go” in its name also points to a smaller size akin to the 8.3-inch iPad Mini.

For now, it sounds like the new tablet will still be a great machine to watch YouTube and Netflix on. On the other hand, it’s unlikely to replace your laptop for work and may struggle to run powerful games.

Aside from the OnePlus Pad Go, OnePlus has also teased a folding phone that is expected to look like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. Rumours suggest that both the new slate and phone could launch in October.
