Tech Know - your phone is all you need

Snappy: phones are replacing cameras
10 April 2012

For those summer city breaks where packing needs to be kept to a minimum, being able to leave your camera at home is a bonus.

New figures released last week have shown that, increasingly, your phone really is all you need and that people are abandoning the compact camera.

Statistics from photo-sharing site Flickr show for the first time that the iPhone has become the most popular camera.

Initially disregarded as poor quality, mobile phones now offer picture-taking capabilities on a par with the cheaper digital compact cameras on the market. And if online rumours are to be believed, the next iPhone could raise the bar even higher, with a much-improved camera and flash.

However, what the mobile phone camera may lack in quality (and don't be fooled, the iPhone 4's 5 megapixel camera is still excellent, while competitors such as Nokia's N8 are even better), they make up for in convenience - and apps.

Sites like instagram have led to a boom in retro-looking photographs, while Facebook has made it incredibly easy to upload your holiday snaps while you're still on holiday.

For the compact digital camera market, it's not a great sign, with many consumers going for a more expensive "prosumer" camera to complement their phone, but for phone makers it's proof that with the right handset your phone really is often all you need.
