Twitter has expanded its reporting tools to protect personal information

The social media platform is prioritising personal security

Twitter has unveiled new reporting tools which make it easier for users to highlight personal data misuse on the online platform.

Now, when a user clicks through to report a Tweet containing private information, they will be taken to an additional menu that allows them to specify the kind of information contained in the 280 character message.

Further narrowing the scope of complaints, check box options include contact information, home address or physical information, financial account information, Government issued ID or ID number, or other.

The platform claims the move will make it ‘faster in reviewing Tweets that share personal information’ – similar to the platform’s October announcement concerning the reporting of bots and profiles tweeting fake news.

Up until now, reporting Tweets containing private information was something of an arduous task as only basic fields were included when reporting violations of the platform’s rules.

The latest in a series of steps taken by the San Francisco giant to improve transparency and security on the platform, last year saw the acquisition of online security organisation Smyte, alongside the implementation of removable filters reading 'you reported this tweet,' over tweet’s reported by a user.

The news comes as CEO Jack Dorsey admitted via a Tweet that the platform had "made progress, but it has been scattered and not felt enough,” when it came to tackling violations of the platform's policy.
