A desktop version of Whatsapp has been made compatible for iPhone users months after its original launch.

The messaging app launched its web service earlier this year for users of Google Chrome, but was not compatible with Apple’s iOS operating system.

The new update means iPhone users can now link the app on their phone with Whatsapp Web by scanning a QR code displayed on screen.

The web based service allows users to respond to their messages and view their previous conversations via a computer.

In a blog post, Whatsapp said: “Today, for the first time, millions of you will have the ability to use WhatsApp on your web browser.

“Our web client is simply an extension of your phone: the web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device -- this means all of your messages still live on your phone.”

To use the web version of the messenger, Whatsapp users must open the app on their phone and click settings, followed by Whatsapp Web.

On a desktop computer, users can visit web.whatsapp.com where they will be given a QR code to scan via the app.

Once connected, the service will allow people to talk to their friends from their computer while still retaining the messages on the mobile app.

Whatsapp users are advised to use wi-fi while using the web service as mobile phones remain connected to the internet throughout.
