Bakerloo line trains are set not to call at one of London's busiest stations from tomorrow as a major revamp of Paddington Tube station gets under way.

The underground station is set to undergo a major upgrade with a new pedestrian built to connect it to Crossrail services.

London Underground said travellers on the Bakerloo service will not be able to stop at the Paddington from Saturday until mid-August.

At the moment around 165,000 people use the Tube station daily, with 82,000 using the Bakerloo line.

It comes as Transport for London carry out extensive upgrade work at the station which will see an underground tunnel built for passengers to change between platforms for the Bakerloo and Elizabeth lines.

The new link will include escalators, lifts, stairs and new passageways for when the Elizabeth line becomes operational from December 2018.

Escalators serving the Bakerloo line will also be renewed so they can be used for a further 20 years.

TfL said the platforms will be reopened in time for the Notting Hill Carnival which starts over two days on Sunday, August 28.

David Waboso CBE, London Underground’s Capital Programmes Director, said: “Paddington Tube station serves as a major interchange and when the Elizabeth line services begin in 2018, around 248,000 customers a day will be using our services.

“We try to carry out as much of our improvement work as possible when the Tube is closed, but in this case we need a closure period due to the nature and scale of the work.

"In order to keep disruption for customers to a minimum, we are combining Bakerloo line escalator and Crossrail construction work so that services are non-stopping for the shortest time possible. We thank customers for their patience while we carry out the vital modernisation of this station.”

Passengers have been reminded they can still access Circle and District lines via the ticket halls while entry to the separate Circle and Hammersmith & City line ticket hall is unaffected.
