The great Bank Holiday getaway got off to a chaotic start today as service cancellations and engineering works hit the transport network.

Londoners hoping to escape the capital for the long weekend saw several stations closed and scores of trains cancelled due to engineering work.

Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Waterloo East stations were all closed today as Network Rail carried out planned repairs.

The vast majority of Southeastern trains out of London Bridge were also suspended.

A rail replacement service has been put in place.

There are also closures on the London Underground today, with the District line suspended between Aldgate East and Dagenham East, or between Turnham Green and Richmond, the Hammersmith & City line suspended between Liverpool Street and Barking, and no service on the London Overground between Richmond and Willesden.

Last night First Great Western was forced to apologise after rain cancellations and delays sparked scenes of “panic” at Paddington station.

Passengers experienced the disruption as they sought to escape London early ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend rush.

First Great Western said services to and from Paddington were severely disrupted after a person was hit by a train near to Twyford, Berkshire.

In a statement First Great Western said: “Following a person hit by a train between Slough and Reading all lines are open but services may be altered or delayed by up to 60 minutes.

“We're sorry for the disruption… The line was closed at Twyford for about 90 minutes which has caused major disruption to our service.”
