Blackwall Tunnel has been closed in both directions after a car erupted in flames.

Transport for London is warning of severe delays on roads in the area after the key river crossing was closed at 9pm.

Drivers are being advised to take other roads with tailbacks already stretching down East India Dock Road and the A12 towards Tredegar Road.

An image from a camera inside the tunnel shows the car engulfed in fire, with grey smoke billowing from its roof.

Frustrated car passengers have taken to Twitter to sharer images from the “gridlock” at the tunnel’s entrances.

The tunnel reopened northbound at around 10pm but the southbound lanes remain closed while checks are made.

In June, the Blackwall Tunnel had to be closed after a jogger decided to run through it.

Police were forced to shut the crossing out of fear for the man's safety after he was spotted on a CCTV camera feed at about 2.20am.
