Brixton is to be linked to the ‘Boris Bike’ network for the first time, it has been announced.

The busy area of south London is to get seven docking stations with space for up to 200 Santander cycles later this year.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he was “thrilled” at the expansion, which will bring the total number of cycle hire docking stations in London to more than 780.

“We’re working hard to make cycling more accessible across London and this will make a real difference to those living in, working in or visiting Brixton,” said the Mayor.

“It’s another step forward in our work to improve air quality and the health of all Londoners.”

Lambeth councillor Jennifer Brathwaite hailed the result of a “long” campaign for the scheme to be expanded to Brixton.

“This all helps to make people fitter and healthier, reduces the congestion on our roads that is contributing to such poor air quality, and reduces the burden on other forms of public transport,” she said.
