This was the moment two cyclists suffered a head-on crash while riding on one of the mayor’s flagship cycle superhighways.

The footage has attracted praise online after the cyclist who caused the crash – and filmed the video – owned up to his mistake and apologised.

And unlike in many crash videos, the two men politely check on each other and their bikes before continuing on their way.

The filmmaker, Cameron Primrose, wrote: “Wouldn't we all be hypocrites if we call out other people's mistakes but never acknowledge our own?”

He added: “Luckily nobody hurt and the bikes were fine… To the cyclist I hit, if you're watching this I'm very sorry. It was totally my fault.

“At least we can get some crash footage entertainment out of it!”

The clip – recorded earlier this month but posted on Tuesday – has also prompted a debate over the safety of the east London cycle lane.

Mr Primrose was entering the Cycle Superhighway 3 (CS3) in Cable Street, Shadwell, when he ploughed into the other rider, who was already using the lane.

One poster said: “This is probably the worst-designed bike lane I've ever seen. Absolutely horrendous; and it doesn't surprise me one bit that you'd see an accident like this there.”

Another wrote: “It's such terrible lane design, I can't believe it.”

Mr Primrose told the Standard he was to blame, not the road layout.

“I think the cycle superhighways are fantastic and are essential for London,” he said.
