Passengers today faced chaos at Heathrow Airport as they were warned they may need to travel without their bags after a system failure.

Those travelling through the Terminal 3 and Terminal 5 were told to pack “essential items” in their hand luggage.

People using the airport complained of long queues as some passengers said they were even told once they got on their flights that there were no bags on board.

Among the operators affected are British Airways and American Airlines. The problems come just three weeks after an IT system glitch caused days of travel chaos for thousands of passengers.

Heathrow said in a statement that the problems “may mean passengers will travel without their bags, and we advise them to pack essential items in their hand luggage.

“We are currently investigating the issue. We are sorry for the disruption and are working hard to get the system running as soon as possible.”

New Yorker Mark Burkey tweeted: "Nightmare on BA @British_Airways flight Heathrow/Palermo. Told @ gate bags are fine then capt'n tells entire flight no bags onboard #scam".

Other terminals were not affected and the problems did not extend to international passengers flying into London.
