The Emirates Air Line cable car is due to close for a week - sparking a wave of mock panic among Londoners.

The cable car, which critics argue is under-used, will shut for seven days next week in order for maintenance work to be carried out.

A statement on the TfL website said: "The Emirates Air Line will be closed from Monday 7 to Sunday 13 March for essential maintenance work.

"This is to ensure reliability and safety, and to avoid the need for any further closures."

A picture of the TfL notice was posted to Reddit, with the message: "MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: EMIRATES CABLE CAR TO BE CLOSED FOR 7 DAYS! HOW WILL WE LIVE?"

And Reddit users have responded in kind, joking that the closure of the line will spell the end for London.

One Reddit user wrote: "ABANDON LONDON! EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF!"

While another responded with: "Should..... should we eat our children?"

One user questioned: "Who knows what kind of post-apocalyptic hell we will find in the docklands in a week."

Reddit user LadInLondon asked: "How on earth am I able to see East London scrapyards from a height now?"

While another commenter joked: "Both regular users reported to be distraught."

And another simply said simply that they were "devastated".
