The first pop-up garden to feature on a London Tube platform was officially launched today.

Commuters passing through Barbican station are being invited to admire the 100 metre long garden, which has been cultivated on a disused platform.

The garden will be maintained by Transport for London staff as part of the Underground in Bloom competition, which will see about 80 stations hosting garden projects. TfL staff who create the best gardens will be given awards this autumn.

The Barbican station garden includes trees, shrubs, flowers and staff will be able to grow their own vegetables.

Volunteers from London Underground and Friends of City Gardens have been working to create the feature during the last year.

Gareth Powell, London Underground’s director for strategy and service development, said: “We are always looking for innovative ways to make our stations attractive and our customer’s journeys more exciting and colourful.

“Our staff and volunteers have done a terrific job in delivering this garden, and I hope our customers enjoy spotting this mini-oasis during their journey.”
