Londoners endure the longest commuting times of anywhere in the UK and also spend more time working while travelling, according to research published today.

Despite having some of the shortest distances to travel to work, people living in and around the capital spend an average of 56 minutes a day getting to and from their jobs.

The analysis by recruiting firm Randstad Financial & Professional found that the average London worker has to travel 15 miles a day, the third shortest commuting distance in Britain. One in 10 in London said they used their travelling time to continue working compared with the national average of 7.5 per cent. Even car drivers use their travelling time to make and take calls.

Tara Ricks, managing director of Randstad, said: “A growing number of savvy Londoners are using their commute to extend their working day and become more productive. However, it’s critical employers ensure their staff are able to switch off.”
