A multi-car pile-up on the M40 has forced police to close the motorway for the third time in three days.

At least five vehicles were involved in the crash on the northbound carriageway near Warwick at around 4pm on Wednesday.

Pictures from the scene showed one car wedged on top of two other vehicles, with smashed glass and debris scattering the tarmac.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue said the northbound carriageway had been closed between junctions 15 and 16, sparking major delays during rush hour.

A Subaru Forester was seen pulling a caravan the wrong direction on the northbound carriageway of the motorway in south Oxfordshire shortly before 4pm.

The vehicle was subsequently in a collision with a Ford Mondeo and a Ford Focus - killing the Subaru driver and passenger, both in their 80s, and the Mondeo driver, a man in his 30s.
