Rail passengers travelling into London with South Western Railway on Saturday face fresh disruption as new strike action begins.

Strikes are being held on the South Western Railway network over the next two Saturdays with a further 48 hour walk-out planned at the end of the month.

It comes after talks between Rail, Maritime and Transport union members and South Western Railway (SWR) broke down.

SWR have told passengers that some services will not run while buses will replace some trains.

A spokesperson for the company said: “We are planning to run more services tomorrow than we did last Saturday.”

Picket lines will be mounted outside stations on Saturday including London Waterloo.

SWR says it has offered a similar deal to one accepted by the RMT on Greater Anglia, but this is denied by the union.

Services on the network were disrupted on Friday evening because of a defective track near Surbiton.

A speed restriction was imposed, with passengers warned disruption will last throughout the weekend.

SWR operates the busiest franchise in Europe carrying 300,000 plus passengers making 650,000 journeys on 1,700 services.

It is owned by transport giant First Group and MTR, owner of the Hong Kong Metro, and took over the franchise from Stagecoach from August last year.
