More trains than ever are being delayed or cancelled with the company managing Southern Rail the worst provider in the country, official statistics have revealed.

Govia Thameslink Railway, which runs the Thameslink and Great Northern franchise alongside Southern, was responsible for 101,103 delays and cancellations last year.

The total of across the country - a record 241,932 trains - was up by nearly a third on the previous 12 months and the highest since the figures were first collated 19 years ago.

The Department for Transport figures recorded trains that arrived at their destinations at least 30 minutes late, with almost 700 services per day affected.

It comes after a year of travel misery for Londoners, who endured a succession of strikes from Southern Rail in a long-running dispute over driver-only operation trains.

The RMT is preparing to announce more strikes, with a £75,000 pay deal offered to Southern Rail driver turned down on Monday.

South West Trains also struggled to run its services on time, with 21,111 delays and cancellations recorded by the Department for Transport.

A Southern spokesman said: "Our service levels were seriously affected by industrial action as well as problems with the track infrastructure on what is the country's most congested network. But service levels have improved for six consecutive months.

"We are modernising and future-proofing the busiest part of the UK's network for passengers, whose numbers, to and from London, have doubled in 12 years.”
