Rail commuters today faced fresh problems as South West Trains services were hit with more delays.

Trains into Waterloo were hit by signalling issues which meant some of the platforms at the station were out of use.

The operator said: “Staff are en route to investigate the problem. This is affecting our longer-distance services from the Alton, Basingstoke and Portsmouth areas.

"Services may be terminated short of their destination in order to minimise delays to trains at London Waterloo."

The incident is the latest in a spate of signal failures and broken down trains which have caused travel misery for rail users this week.

Commuters spoke of their frustration of at the delays on Twitter.

Michael Dunn posted: "Avoid #Waterloo pals. 15 mins to get out the station!"

Victoria Dalton added: "Left half an hour early just in case @SW_Trains was its usual mess and wouldn't you know it, I'm late. Not sure why they have a timetable."

Mick Cash, general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union, said: "After another morning of delays it is time the government got a grip and stopped dangling gold-plated franchises in front of European state rail operators and gave a British state provider a chance to sort this mess out."
