Commuters attempting to travel home during rush hour faced delays on four Tube lines and issues with trains at London Waterloo.

The Piccadilly line was part suspended between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge, with severe delays between Acton Town and Uxbridge due to a signal failure at Ruislip.

Meanwhile there were problems on the District line and Circle line due to an earlier faulty train at Sloane Square.

There were also issues on the Metropolitan line between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Uxbridge due to a signal failure at Ruislip, though normal service resumed shortly before 7pm.

Images showed packed platforms at stations on affected routes, full of disgruntled looking would-be passengers.

A TfL spokesperson, addressing the severe delays between Acton Town and Uxbridge, said: "We apologise for these delays. Tickets are being accepted on local buses and our engineers are on site working to resolve the issue.”

Shortly before 7pm, an update from the Piccadilly Line on social media said: "Minor delays between Acton Town and Uxbridge / Heathrow Airport. A good service is operating on the rest of the line."

As well as the issues with the underground, some London train services also faced problems.

South Western Railway services at London Waterloo were delayed, due to "several incidents on the South Western Railway network today".

A statement from National Rail said: "Trains to and from the station may be cancelled, delayed or revised."

Many commuters in the capital were left frustrated by the underground issues,

One facing delays on the underground, writing on Twitter, said: "This is why I don't take the tube anymore."

A passenger embarking on the District Line described using it as a "daily horror show" and added she uses buses over the tube due to such issues.

Writing on Twitter, she said: "Even though it takes a lot longer I at least get there."
