A person has died after falling onto the tracks at Tottenham Court station this afternoon.

Commuters travelling on the Central Line have been hit with disruption this evening, as a large stretch of the line was closed following with the incident.

The central London station was shut at the height of the evening rush hour, while emergency services were on the scene.

It reopened just over an hour later.

Oxford Street was also blocked westbound to traffic, by emergency vehicles dealing with the incident.

The entire Central Line was closed between Marble Arch and Liverpool Street, with severe delays on the rest of the line.

A statement from British Transport Police said: "We’ve been called to Tottenham Court Road after a report a person was struck by a train on a Central Line platform. Police were alerted just before 4.40pm.

"Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service however a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"We are now working to identify the person and inform their family.

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
