Up to 3,000 Tube station staff planning a 48 hour strike this weekend were told today: “take part and lose a £500 bonus.”

The walkout, scheduled to start on 9pm on Saturday, will cause major disruption for homebound London revellers and for the Tube’s four million daily users the following Monday.

Steve Griffiths, London Underground (LU) chief operating officer, said: “The only thing a strike will do is badly hit hardworking Londoners and lose staff two days pay and a £500 bonus.”

The dispute is over ticket office closures, jobs and rosters. New rosters for station staff are due to come into force this coming weekend, which a strike could prevent happening, and staff have been offered the bonus for the “successful launch of the new operating model.”

The dispute is separate from one which has delayed the start of an all night Tube service.

Crunch talks were taking place today between the RMT union and LU to try and avert the walkout.
